EVENTS
We encourage members and potential members to join us for monthly meetings at Sterling Heights Recreation Center on the fourth Thursday of (almost) every month at noon. Contact us at WomenDocsVillages2022@gmail.com if you have questions or would like to join. Meetings are conducted in person and on Zoom.
SEPTEMBER 2024
Thursday, September 12 - Book Club. 1 pm. This month we are reading Reyna Grande’s The Distance Between Us. In 2012 it was a finalist for the National Book Awards and was later adapted for younger readers. In-person discussion will take place at 1 pm at Janice Matthews’ home. However, you can always opt to attend the discussion via ZOOM. For more information about the book club, check with Lucy Rathier.
Monday, September 16 - Luncheon. Lunch is at 11:30 am at RedSauce, located at 1000 Canal Street in The Villages. You may RSVP on the Facebook page or email Janice Matthews. Menus are available online.
Sunday, September 22 – Arts and Crafts. Coming in September will be a session on the joys as well as possibilities of folding paper. Sue Laluk will preside over a session on origami. She lived in Japan, so she knows about paper folding.
Tuesday, September 24– Monthly Outing. Sue Nelson has arranged a WDC tour for September 24 at the Fred Funk Butterfly Garden, 231 Lake Griffin Road. It begins at 9:15 am and is free. However, donations are welcomed. Following the tour we will have brunch at the Cottage Inn (340 S US Highway 27 441). For additional details, contact Sue.
Thursday, September 26 - Monthly Meeting. Come to the Sterling Heights Recreation Center at noon to hear a presentation by Mary Ellen Shea on grieving and loss. Known as the “Widow Mentor,” Ms. Shea uses education and support groups to transfer pain into purpose. Bring a bag lunch and hang out after the meeting to eat and socialize.
OCTOBER 2024
Wednesday, October 2 – Theatre Group will attend “The Vote.”
Thursday, October 24 – General Meeting. Our speaker will be Erin Daly, Judge for the 5th Judicial Circuit. The topic is “Civic Literacy.”
COMING IN 2024 AND 2025
Monday, December 16 – Holiday Luncheon. Mark your calendars now for the 2024 WDC Holiday Luncheon, which will again be at Paulie’s at The Oaks located off S.R. 44 (Continental Country Club, located at 75 Continental Blvd. in Wildwood). Separate invitations will be sent later in the year. Questions should be directed to Janice Matthews, Luncheon Coordinator.
2024 and 2025 Theatre Productions. Future productions include:
-
“When We Were Young & Unafraid” 7:00 pm on Dec. 4, 2024
-
“Pippin” 7:00 pm on Feb. 5, 2025
-
“Qualia” 7:00 pm on Apr.16, 2025
Tickets for “The Vote,” “Pippin,” and “Qualia” are already either sold out or almost sold out. So, if you are interested in attending any of these productions and are unable to obtain a ticket, contact Christie St-John, our Theater Outings Coordinator, and let her know that you are available if someone cannot use their ticket.
ON-GOING ACTIVITIES (Some of these may be suspended for the summer. Check with the activity coordinators.)
Bowling. The WDC bowling group is about fun, not necessarily strikes and spares. Even if you haven’t played for years or have never tried to play, but think you’d like to explore your options, contact Linda for more details or to offer suggestions.
Bridge. The Bridge group meets twice a month on the first and third Tuesdays from 2 - 4 pm in members' homes. If you would like to play, please contact our Bridge Coordinator, Kim Stoker.
Executive Golf. WDC’s weekly golf groups play on executive courses between C.R. 42 and The Village of Fenney. Both groups are relaxed, non-competitive groups. Contact Jane Howard to play with the South group (which plays on Fridays between C.R. 466 and the Village of Fenney) and contact Christie St-John to play with the North group (which plays on Thursdays between C.R. 42 and Lake Sumter Landing). Contact Christie for location and tee times. Weather might keep these events from happening, so contact coordinators.
Mahjong. The group meets Mondays at 1 pm in a friendly, no-betting environment. You must know the basics of the game to participate. Contact Kim Bethea to take part.
Pickleball. Two courts are reserved weekly at 4:00 pm on Wednesdays at the Coconut Cove Recreation Center for our pickleball players. There is no need to RSVP. Please contact our Pickleball Coordinator, Anne Daugherty Miles to make sure they are playing in the heat.
Samba (the card game, not the dance). Our Samba group plays on Wednesday afternoons, meeting at 1pm in members’ homes. If you would like to play, please contact Nancy Sacks.
WDC Arts & Crafts. WDC’s Arts and Crafts group meets from 1:30 - 3:30 pm on the fourth Sunday of every month at Lake Okahumpka Recreation Center. Contact our temporary Arts & Crafts coordinator, Wanda Smith Kearns to learn more.
WDC Monthly Meetings. Sterling Heights Recreation Center (the Torch Lake Room) at 2508 St Charles Place on the fourth Thursday of (almost) every month at noon in person and on Zoom.
